We've previously heard that the compact crossover will be based on the third-generation Mazda2 subcompact hatchback, sharing its Skyactiv chassis, powertrains and available technologies. The new Mazda CX-3 is the fifth model to feature the automaker's suite of Skyactiv technologies and wear the brand's Kodo design language.

The teaser image above hints at styling similar to the new Mazda2, but we can likely expect the mini-CUV to ride on a raised suspension and feature different bodywork. Power could come from the new 1.5-liter Skyactiv I-4 available in the Japanese-market Mazda2. One rumor suggests the CX-3 crossover could be front-drive only. Mazda's suite of active safety and connectivity technologies could be available on higher trim levels, and pricing for the CX-3 should undercut the larger CX-5 crossover's base price of $22,375.

Competitors for the new CX-3 include the Nissan Juke, as well as the upcoming Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, and Fiat 500X subcompact crossovers. It's unknown if the CX-3 will debut in concept or production form, but we've previously heard the model would hit the market by the 2016 model year. It's also unknown where it will be produced, but based on past reports, it will share a plant with the new Mazda2. Production of the new B-segment hatch recently began at Mazda's plant in Salamanca, Mexico.

The Los Angeles auto show will also host the world premieres of the updated Mazda6 sedan and Mazda CX-5 crossover, though details on those refreshed models have yet to be announced. The automaker will also show the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, which will feature a 2.0-liter Skyactiv I-4 in the U.S. Other markets will be available with a new 1.5-liter Skyactiv I-4.
