Mazda is partnering with Microsoft's Xbox video game system once again, this time to promote the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. The Japanese automaker is giving Xbox owners a chance to explore the new Miata inside and out in the upcoming "Forza Horizon 2" open-world racing game. In addition, a contest that will allow gamers to design a unique livery for the first-gen Miata has been launched.

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 interactive experience will be available through a Mazda-branded hub on both Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles. The design contest, which is live now through January 4, 2015, tasks players with designing a unique livery for the NA-chassis 1994 Mazda MX-5, which is available in-game. Mazda will fly two finalists out to the 2015 South by Southwest technology conference in Austin, Tex., for a design showdown. The winner will receive a 55-inch curved TV, home audio system, Xbox One Kinect console, and a MadCatz racing wheel valued as $3499. The winning design will also be featured in Forza Horizon 2, where it will be available as a free download for all players.

The submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges comprised of representatives from Microsoft, Mazda, and Forza developer Turn 10 Studios, which will select five potential semi-finalists. Entries will be judged based on originality, aesthetic design, and technical proficiency. From there, entries will be further narrowed down to just two through online voting. At SXSW, a winner will be determined by special judges Mazda design director Derek Jenkins, Xbox Live's Major Nelson, and Forest Byrd of YouTube channel TC9700Gaming. Players must use the in-game design tools to customize their Miata, and save their creation under the name "MX5contest" before uploading it to the Forza Horizon 2 storefront.

Mazda previously worked with Xbox when it revealed the third-generation Mazda3 live on the Xbox 360 last year. The global unveiling was accompanied by a performance by the band Metric, which was also streamed over Xbox Live.
