Mazda Previews Koeru Concept Ahead of Its Frankfurt Debut

Mazda will unveil the Koeru concept crossover at the Frankfurt motor show this September. From the preview image Mazda has released, it looks like it could be the next CX-9.

The name "Koeru" is derived from a Japanese word meaning to "exceed" or "go beyond." The model features a dramatic version of Mazda's Kodo design theme, made complete by large wheels, narrow headlights, and a sloped roofline.

"Mazda aimed to impart the Koeru with the power and vitality of a wild animal while maintaining a sense of refined dignity," the automaker said in a release.

No word if the Koeru concept will ever make its way to production, but we think it will in some form or another. It is likely the inspiration for a new CX-9, which is due for a replacement very soon. The model was last given a face-lift for 2013, but hasn't been fully redesigned since its debut for 2007. On the other hand, the Koeru could provide the brainstorming for some entirely new crossover.
