McLaren has given us our first look at the upcoming Sports Series, the model that's been referred to internally as the P13 and will slot below the 650S in the lineup. The lone image shows a camouflaged prototype for the sports car drifting in the wet, and we can see a clear family resemblance to the 650S.

That's not surprising, as the Sports Series is built on the same carbon fiber chassis and sports a mid-mounted V-8, likely a variant of the 650S' twin-turbocharged unit tuned to around 500 hp. The front end is covered up, but we can see that the mirrors appear to be mounted lower on the doors compared to the 650S, while the vent in the door ahead of the rear fender looks almost like a very large NACA duct. A banner with the McLaren Sports Series' social media hashtag appears on the windshield.

The new McLaren is intended to take on the higher-performance versions of the Porsche 911, including the 911 Turbo and GT3. The sports car will also provide some competition for the new Mercedes-AMG GT. We've heard that the Sports Series will sell for under $200,000, possibly around $180,000. We know the model will debut sometime in 2015, but until it does this lone image is all we have to whet our appetites for now.

What do you think of McLaren's sub-650S sports car?
