Mercedes-Benz will debut the Concept GLC Coupe, a smaller, near-production design study that references the GLE Coupe formula, at the Shanghai motor show. The Concept GLC will replace the GLK SUV and feature a sports coupe-like design, forgoing more traditional SUV design elements. The polarizing design is very similar to the BMW X4, which will be the Concept GLC's closest direct competitor when it enters production. The coupe's proportions, along with its 21-inch tires, indicate the new model's off-road potential, ensuring the GLC Coupe isn't just another compact luxury SUV better suited or confined to the city streets.

The new Mercedes-Benz Concept GLC Coupe features elements previously shown on the GLE Coupe, just on a smaller scale. Total length measures 186.2 inches, with a 111.4-inch wheelbase. The Concept GLC Coupe sits on 21-inch wheels, giving this near-production model a sporty, dramatic appearance. The front end features an upright twin-blade radiator grille with large side air intakes. LED headlights complete the look, with DLRs and turn indicators using the upper strip inserts, while three rotating lenses adapt to different driving situations to illuminate the road.

The Concept GLC's profile is reminiscent of the BMW X4, as it looks more like a lifted sports coupe than an SUV or even the GLK it replaces. But the GLC Coupe does feature a few more traditional SUV elements, including side running boards, muscular bodylines, and integrated roof rails. At the rear, the Concept GLC has split taillights and a spoiler lip emphasizing a design feature that originally debuted on the S-Class Coupe. The LED taillight design takes styling cues from the headlights, with the strips up top housing the turn signals, while a circular rear light closes around a central lens for better visibility.

To go along with the aggressive new styling, power will come from a 367-hp, direct-injected biturbo V-6 engine mated to a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive. Just like a sports coupe, the Concept GLC Coupe will produce a distinct engine growl that can be adjusted by the driver to become a quieter, subdued noise or a throaty whine.

We expect consumer reaction to the design to be polarizing. A production version of the Mercedes-Benz Concept GLC Coupe is expected; however, the automaker has yet to announce the go-ahead.
