Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4 Squared Going Into Production

If you want a more extreme G-Class, but you don't want to pony up the roughly $600,000 for a G63 AMG 6x6, Mercedes-Benz is giving you another option. The automaker has announced that it will produce the G500 4x4 2 (read "squared") concept it showed at this year's Geneva Motor Show. The production truck will arrive with the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and portal axles as the concept.

Derived from the completely bonkers AMG 6x6, the G500 4x4 2 packs less power at 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, but gets most of the six-wheeled G-Wagen's other driveline goodies, including its Unimog-like portal axles and permanent four-wheel drive system. The G500 4x4 2 also gets a track that's nearly a foot wider than the standard G-Class, a generous lift to a total of 17.7 inches of ground clearance, adjustable dual-spring dampers, and 22-inch wheels wrapped in 325/55-size tires.

In Europe, pricing for the G500 4x4 2 will start at 226,100 euros (roughly $257,000 by today's exchange rates). That's about $119,000 more than what you'd pay for a U.S.-spec G63 AMG, though you can likely expect that price to drop somewhat if the special G500 comes stateside. The model goes on sale in Europe this December.
