Mercedes-Benz to Boost Service Capacity at Dealerships

Mercedes-Benz is poised to sell 400,000 vehicles in the next few years, and even though that’s great news for the automaker, all those newly sold cars could present a problem when it comes time for a service check. To keep up with the high demand, the company has decided to increase service capacity at its U.S. dealerships by 25 percent.

"If your network was laid out at 200,000, and every year you are sending out 350,000 to 400,000 cars, you have to take care of those customers," Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon told Automotive News. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

In order for those customers to be taken care of, Mercedes-Benz may add service bays and increase the service areas at its dealerships across the country. Or, some dealerships could add a second shift to handle even more service appointments, a plan that is being considered for Mercedes-Benz Manhattan later this year. In addition to expanding the service area, about 25 percent of dealerships will have to expand their showroom and vehicle storage space.

Talks with dealerships will begin later this year, with a final plan expected in 2016 and construction to begin sometime between 2017 and 2018. The expansions are just one of the new changes that dealerships will be undergoing, as they’ve also been commanded to adhere to a new dealership standard called Autohaus 2. This new standard calls for mostly cosmetic and signage changes. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

Another new thing we’ll see in Mercedes dealerships in the future is a shop-in-shop store for its AMG high-performance range. Cannon said that a wall will divide it from the main showroom, and specially trained salespeople will run it. The dedicated AMG space will be built by select dealers with the highest AMG sales in key markets such as southern Florida, Southern California, and the New York metro area.
