Mercedes-Benz was Best-Selling Luxury Automaker in 2013

BMW's reign as the best-selling luxury brand in the U.S. has ended, as Mercedes-Benz has claimed that title for 2013. Mercedes-Benz sales, not including Sprinter or Smart, totaled 312,534 units, compared to BMW's 309,280 units. If you factor in the brands under each automaker's umbrella, however, BMW is still king with Mini's additional 66,502 units.

The C-Class was the Silver Arrow brand's best seller for the year at 88,251 units, but couldn't top the BMW 3/4 Series' 119,521 units. BMW also beat Mercedes in the month of December, with 37,389 units sold to Mercedes' 33,007 units.

In the midsize luxury sedan category, the E-Class toppled the 5 Series in 2013 with sales of 69,803 units versus 56,863 units for the BMW. The M-Class was also a strong performer, with sales up 8.5 percent over 2012 at 41,326 units.
