The long-rumored Mercedes-Benz four-door crossover coupe will official makes its debut in concept form at the Auto China show in Beijing later this month. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche yesterday made the announcement while speaking at a company shareholders meeting, stating that the automaker has great potential by selling a crossover that combines “a coupe and SUV.”

Dubbed the Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV, it will likely wear an MLC badge once it goes into production, signifying its ML-based chassis and coupe-like styling. It will compete with the BMW X6, which itself is based on the X5. Like the ML, expect the MLC to be powered by a number of gas and diesel-powered V-6s and turbocharged V-8s, including a hand-built unit from the speed junkies at AMG.

“We’re bringing the best of two worlds together with a sporty coupe that also offers typical Mercedes off-road capabilities,” Zetsche said at the meeting. “We’re confident it will be a success.”

Like most Mercedes SUVs, the new crossover should be built at the automaker’s U.S. plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala., which was the recent recipient of a $350 million investment to accommodate MLC production.

Mercedes could also opt to build the new crossover in China, where it already builds the C-Class, E-Class, and GLK. The automaker also started building engines in Beijing, acquired a 12-percent interest in China-based BAIC Motor, and is slated to building the new GLA crossover in the country later this year.
