As the Tesla Model S continues to evolve with "Insane" and "Ludicrous" driving modes, other automakers are scrambling to produce something to compete. One of those automakers is Mercedes-Benz, which could have an all-electric vehicle capable of over 300 miles of range ready “soon.”

Research

Thomas Weber, the head of development at Mercedes-Benz, recently spoke with German magazine auto motor und sport and said his company is working on a "concept for a highly attractive electric vehicle with a range of 400-500 kilometers (228-311 miles)."

It's unclear if Benz' new EV is being developed completely in house or will include input from Tesla Motors. Mercedes and Tesla previously partnered on vehicles like the B-Class Electric Drive, but their relationship appears to be waning. Last year Mercedes lost its spot on Tesla’s board and sold off its remaining stake in the EV automaker.

It continues to invest in fuel cell development and plans to have a hydrogen-powered car ready by 2017.

Additionally, Mercedes is launching more plug-in hybrid models in the coming years. Benz has already unveiled plug-in hybrid versions of the C-, S-, and GLE-Class and the modular powertrain will eventually make its way to more models like the E and GL. Mercedes' EV system is also expected to be a modular setup available for multiple platforms.
