Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled details on its upcoming all-electric vehicle, which the automaker says will return around 310 miles of range. Benz says the EV will be ready by the end of the decade, though a concept version will debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show at the end of September.

The automaker made the announcement during its TecDay Road to the Future event held last week in Stuttgart. Benz says the EV will be based on a multi-model electric vehicle architecture, a new platform dedicated to battery-powered vehicles and not shared with any fuel-powered cars.

The new electric platform is similar to Tesla's modular setup. A lithium-ion battery is mounted at the vehicle's floor, while electric motors are found at both the front and rear axles. As the architecture's name suggests, the platform will spawn multiple models, which should include a number of SUVs and sedans.

"We are investing massively in electric mobility, and we are convinced that the market is now ready."

Benz says it will invest at least 7 billion euros ($7.9 billion) in green technology over the next two years. In addition to battery electric vehicles, Mercedes is spending money on fuel-cell technology, and plug-in hybrids vehicles. Benz continues to expand its PHEV lineup with the launch of the GLC350e Coupe and E350e later this year.
