The current Ford Taurus (shown in these photos) has been with us for about six years, which means a new one needs to arrive soon, especially with the arrival of fresh competitors like the 2016 Nissan Maxima. And according to Detroit Free Press, Ford is planning to do just that.

Ford has confirmed that the next Taurus will debut at the Shanghai auto show later this month. The Ford Taurus is just one of many new products the automaker is planning to release in China by the end of the year, continuing its effort to increase sales in the country.

Introduced for model-year 2010, the current-gen Ford Taurus went through a refresh in 2013. It’s offered with a standard 288-hp 3.5-liter V-6 or a choice of two, turbocharged EcoBoost engines -- a 240-hp 2.0-liter I-4 or a 365-hp 3.5-liter V-6 in the Taurus SHO model.

Despite its age and criticism for its cramped interior, the Taurus in 2014 outsold competitors like the Hyundai Azera and Nissan Maxima. General Motors, however, sold more than twice as many Impala sedans, while the Toyota Avalon also topped the Taurus.

The 2016 Maxima, however, appears to be a strong competitor thanks to its polarizing sheetmetal, dramatically improved interior, lighter chassis, and a 3.5-liter V-6 that’ll pump out 300 hp.

We'll find out more about the next Ford Taurus closer to its debut in Shanghai, which runs from April 20-29.
