Today at the Vienna Motor Symposium, Audi unveiled an all-new engine that utilizes a new combustion method to increase performance and efficiency. The new 2.0-liter, TFSI turbo-four engine delivers 188 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, while returning a claimed 47 mpg. Audi says peak torque will be available at a low 1,450 rpm.

Audi engineers have created a new combustion method to achieve these results, including an Audi Valvelift System that shortens or lengthens the intake time based on engine load. The system also boasts optimal cylinder charges thanks to a higher boost pressure on the inlet side. This new method is comparable to the Miller cycle, but has been further developed for better efficiency and performance.

"Thanks to this rightsizing approach, the new engine enjoys the consumption benefits of a downsizing engine in partial load operation, while at higher loads it has the advantages of a large-displacement engine. The result is optimal efficiency and performance characteristics across the entire engine speed range," said Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Head of Engine Development at Audi,in a statement.

While these advancements improve the performance and efficiency, the new engine also weighs roughly 309 pounds. Audi has also found a way to control the coolant flow to shorten the time it takes for the engine to warm up. The exhaust manifold is also now integrated into the cylinder head, furthering the new engine's efficiency.

Audi will debut the new engine in the next generation of the A4 later this year. Not much else is known about the new A4, though we expect more powertrain and technical specs to surface in the coming months.
