Next-Gen Honda Civic Sedan Prototype Shows Off New Interior

Although sport compact fans are probably more excited about the U.S.-bound Honda Civic Type-R, the next-generation Civic sedan will be a more important car for mainstream consumers as well as for Honda. We've seen the new Civic sedan before, but the latest spy shots get up close with the four-door and reveal the car’s new interior.

Research

Previewed by the Honda Civic Coupe concept from the 2015 New York auto show, the next-generation Civic sedan will feature more of a fastback rear end compared to the current model. Inside, we can see that the current two-tier instrument cluster has been replaced with a more conventional unit. The redesign also includes a new center stack with vents above a new infotainment system and climate controls above a large storage bin. The console-mounted shifter is flanked on the left by a new electronic parking brake switch and hill hold button, with an Eco button to the right. As evidenced by the button on the turn signal stalk and side-mirror-mounted camera, Honda's LaneWatch feature returns on the next-gen Civic.

Other features include a multi-function steering wheel as well as rear seat heater buttons on the back of the center console, which hint at luxurious features that will be available on the new model. A fabric-covered armrest appears to hide another large storage area. Interior materials also appear to be higher quality than the current car, with leather seating and a carbon-fiber-look strip sewn into the seats. The rear seats also appear more spacious than the already generous seats of the current car.

Two different trim levels were spotted, with one featuring a single exhaust tip and 16-inch wheels wrapped in 215/55R16 Hankook Kinergy GT tires and the other featuring a dual-exhaust system with 17-inch wheels and 215/50R17 Firestone FT140 tires.

Other details include new exterior lighting. While the more basic model features projector headlights, the upper trim model features full LED lighting similar to the concept car and the newly revealed 2016 Honda Accord.
