Next-Gen Kia Optima Teased, Coming to New York

It's been nearly five years since the current Kia Optima debuted at the New York auto show in 2010, and the South Korean brand has chosen the Big Apple once again as the site to debut the next-gen Optima. Previewed in these teaser sketches, the next Kia Optima looks sleeker than the sedan it replaces.

As predicted, the Optima's front end bears a resemblance to the stunning Sportspace wagon concept that debuted in Geneva earlier this month. The sedan gets a similarly slender tiger-nose grille and angular, swept-back headlights. The front valance, however, is completely new, with bumper-integrated parking lights or foglights and an usual pair of blue accent lights in the lower grille. From the side, the next Optima's roofline appears even more raked than on the current model, while the taillights are narrow like those on the Sportspace concept. But don't expect the roofline to look quite as sleek as this sketch, as we've spied a prototype for the next-gen Kia Optima with a less aggressively raked rear. The unusual C-pillar design seen in these renderings, however, was visible on the test mule.

We'll have to wait until the Optima debuts on April 1 at the New York auto show to learn more about Kia's latest midsizer, but for now we have a pretty good idea of what it will look like.
