Next-Gen Toyota Tacoma Scheduled for Detroit Debut

We've been aware the next-gen Toyota Tacoma was in the works, but now, Bloomberg is reporting the midsize pick-up is ready for its big debut at next month’s 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

In addition to showing the revamped truck at the show next month, the outlet reports the company will be making an official announcement about it. Seeing it should come as a surprise to all, as not much has been revealed about the new Tacoma. We spied the pickup wearing minimal camouflage earlier this year, and from the looks of it, it appeared to be a mock-up of the current Tacoma.

Camouflage covered a few key items like the center stack, but nothing else appeared to look significantly different. Rumor has it that the four- and five-speed automatic gearboxes will be dropped in favor of a six-speed like in the 2014 Toyota Tundra, while others suggest the regular cab model will be scrapped from the lineup. Because the tester appeared to be the same size as the current Tacoma, it's possible it'll keep the same bones, though it could use a tweaked version of the current truck's frame. With this in mind, it's possible the changes on the new Tacoma could be more cosmetic than mechanically substantial.

The redone Tacoma will arrive in a timely fashion, as General Motors has rejoined the midsize pickup segment with the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and 2015 GMC Canyon. The Colorado has already hit the ground running, as we just named it our 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year. Even still, the Colorado's early success isn't worrying Toyota too much, as the automaker claims it doesn't see much cross-shopping with Chevy as it does with Ford. With the Ranger now gone from the U.S. lineup, Toyota admits it pretty much had the segment all to itself before the Colorado arrived.

A new Tacoma should hopefully heat things up in the small truck segment, but we won't know for sure until the truck makes its debut next month in Detroit.
