A prototype for the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been spotted testing in Germany. While few details of the next E-Class are known, we can make out a few details through the camouflage.

Research

From these images, the prototype appears to have softer lines similar to those of the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class and new 2015 C-Class sedan. The current E-Class, which received a mid-cycle refresh for 2014, has a relatively more chiseled look than its recently redesigned stable mates.

Also expect the option of a twin-turbo V-8, a plug-in hybrid, and a high-performance AMG variant. Also look for Benz’s new nine-speed automatic transmission, which has already launched in Europe in the E350 Bluetec, replacing the previous seven-speed auto gearbox to to increase fuel economy and acceleration.

Like the 2015 C-Class, we expect more of the current S-Class sedan’s technology and refinement to make it into the next E-Class, which is expected to debut in 2016 as a 2017 model.
