The No. 23 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 driven by Jann Mardenborough caught air at the Nürburgring sending the race car over the fence into the spectator section killing one and injuring several others, sportscar365.com reports.

The crash occurred during the second hour of the opening round of the VLN series Saturday on a part of the track known as the Flugplatz; loosely translated as "flying place." The Flugplatz is a twin apex right-hand turn following a blind crest.

A red flag was immediately issued stopping the race so medical vehicles could get to the scene. The spectator was pronounced dead at the track's medical center and four injured spectators were taken to an area hospital. Although the racer was able to exit the vehicle on his own, he was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Officials cancelled the remainder of the race after the crash.

“Today’s events have been a tragedy," Nissan said in a statement. "We are all deeply shocked and saddened by these events and our immediate thoughts go to the deceased, those injured and their families and friends.

“The team is fully co-operating with the race organizers to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into this incident.”
