Nissan Juke to be Sold in China as Infiniti ESQ

The Nissan Juke has finally landed in China, but not as a Nissan model. The Juke will be sold as the Infiniti ESQ in the emerging market, offered with the Juke Nismo's powertrain but unique badging.

The model gets a conspicuous ESQ badge in place of the Nissan "hamburger" emblem across its grille. Without Nissan's signature V-Motion design theme to break up the grille, the CUV has a more wide-mouthed grin compared to its overseas counterpart. Being an Infiniti, the ESQ also appears to sport more chrome trim than a U.S.-market Juke. Infiniti ESQ© Provided by MotorTrend Infiniti ESQ

What the two models have in common is a standard turbocharged 1.6-liter DIG four-cylinder engine and CVT with seven-speed manual mode. According to the specs Infiniti China provided, the ESQ's turbo-four produces 147 kW and 250 Nm (197 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque). Those numbers match the output of the slightly hotter Juke Nismo, giving the ESQ a bit more power to work with. The ESQ will be offered exclusively with all-wheel drive, receiving a torque vector control system that aids in cornering and all-terrain grip.

Curiously, Infiniti is forgoing the QX naming scheme it established in late 2012. Up until now, every Infiniti crossover or SUV has been rebranded as a QX model, while every car has gone with the Q prefix. Separating the Juke-based ESQ from that strategy could mean the model is only a stopgap until the new Q30 compact arrives. Infiniti has done something similar in the U.S., selling the old G37 alongside its replacement, the Q50, until a true entry-level offering arrives. The Infiniti ESQ lands in China sometime this year, so we should know more then. Infiniti ESQ© Provided by MotorTrend Infiniti ESQ
