Nissan, Other Minivans Perform Badly in IIHS Testing

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently performed crash tests on a group of minivans, and of the four, the 2015 Toyota Sienna was the only one to pass the agency's small overlap crash test.

Nissan, Other Minivans Perform Badly in IIHS Testing

While the minivan didn't pass with flying colors like the previously tested Honda Odyssey, the Sienna was still able to withstand the test thanks to a number of modifications Toyota made to the front structure of therefreshed model. Unlike the Odyssey's "good" rating, the IIHS gave the minivan an acceptable rating because the intrusion in the minivan measured as much as 5.5 inches at the upper door hinge pillar and instrument panel. The fact that the dummy's head slid away from the front airbag also prevented it from earning a good score, in addition to seat belts that allowed the dummy to move too far forward. However, the Sienna's side curtain airbag provided the dummy's head with sufficient protection from the intruding structure. Measures taken from the dummy showed that the risk of injury would be low in this type of crash. 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite© Provided by MotorTrend 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite

Research

The same can't be said for the Nissan Quest, which performed the poorest among the bunch. The IIHS said the Quest's structure was pushed in nearly 2 feet at the lower hinge pillar, with the brake pedal pushed in 16 inches toward the driver. This dummy's left leg and right foot were trapped, and the damage was bad enough that the entire seat had to be cut out so that the right foot freed by a crowbar. Other poor performers included the Chrysler Town & Country and its platform-mate, the Dodge Grand Caravan. The IIHS noted that the Chrysler's entire structure collapsed around the dummy, and that injuries to the left hip, left knee and left lower leg were very likely in this type of crash. 2014 Nissan Quest Small Overlap Crash Test Action Shot© Provided by MotorTrend 2014 Nissan Quest Small Overlap Crash Test Action Shot

This means that the Honda Odyssey is the only minivan to have earned a good rating in the small overlap test, though the Toyota Sienna is also deemed safe with its acceptable rating.
