After a 15-year run, the Nissan Xterra will be officially axed and won’t be included in the automaker’s lineup for model-year 2016. Nissan today made the official announcement in a press release charting the changes to its 2016 lineup.

Research

The Xterra’s demise isn’t surprising. Sales of the SUV have declined to 8,114 units through July 2015, a 25-percent decrease from the same period last year. The current second-generation Xterra was introduced almost a decade ago and has carried on without any significant mechanical changes. First-gen Xterra.© Provided by MotorTrend First-gen Xterra.

The Xterra’s body-on-frame chassis makes it a relatively capable off-roader in a dwindling segment that includes the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner. The Xterra’s sole engine choice is a 4.0-liter V-6 rated at 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque that returns 16/22 mpg city/highway (rear-drive model).

The more practical and fuel-efficient Rogue is currently Nissan’s best-selling crossover, outselling the Xterra by around 25 to 1 units. The 2016 Nissan Rogue receives a few updates, including the addition of Forward Emergency Braking to the Rogue SL Premium Package. The Rogue SL now gets NissanConnect Services, while the Siri Eyes Free system is added to the Rogue SV Premium Package and Rogue SL. Finally, the Blind Spot Warning feature has been upgraded from a camera-based to a radar-based system.

Other Model Year 2016 Changes

The 2016 Nissan Sentra and Altima will be significant updated, and changes to those models will be announced at a later time. The 2016 Maxima and Titan are all-new models, while updates to the GT-R have been previously announced.

Meanwhile, the 2016 370Z coupe has been updated with an available Bose stereo system that includes Active Noise Cancellation and Active Sound Enhancement. Additionally, Deep Blue Pearl is offered as a new paint color that replaces Midnight Blue. The Versa sedan now gets standard color-matched power side-view mirrors, while the Versa S receives standard rear speakers. Meanwhile, the Versa Note SV gets more standard items like Nissan Connect with Mobile Apps, Bluetooth connectivity, and a RearView Monitor.

The Nissan Juke lineup grows with the Nismo and Nismo RS models, while Siri Eyes Free is now added as standard equipment. The Pathfinder no longer includes the hybrid powertrain, and the V-6 model carries on with minor changes.

The Nissan Frontier, Murano, Quest, and NV200 are essentially unchanged. Nissan says details regarding the 2016 Leaf and Armada will come at a later date.
