The Cadillac CTS-V has been overshadowed by other high-performance luxury midsizers like the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG for far too long now. To remedy this, a Cadillac spokesman has confirmed to us that the third-generation CTS-V will make its world debut at next month's Detroit auto show.

Cadillac is keeping a tight lid on details, but we already know quite a bit about the new model based on prototypes we've seen early this year. In February, we spotted a CTS-V prototype with a performance exhaust system, power bulge on the hood, and a new grille that replaces the mesh pattern for a design with vertical lines. The rear is expected to be completely redesigned as well with a new bumper and lip spoiler integrated into the trunk lid.

Rumor has it that the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V will take after the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 in terms of performance. The high-performance sedan is likely to receive a version of the Z06's supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine with nearly 600 hp.

Since its debut, the CTS-V has lost a bit of its performance edge among sports sedans. The 2015 Charger is now the world's most powerful production sedan, producing up to 707 hp compared to the current CTS-V's 556. We'll just have to wait to see what Cadillac brings to the game with its next-gen performance topper. If it goes anything like the redesigned CTS, we have high hopes.
