Opel has unveiled its latest touring car racer ahead of the car's debut at the Frankfurt auto show in September. Based on the Opel Astra, the car has been built to the new TCR series' regulations and will eventually be available to customer race teams for the 2016 season.

The hatchback features a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine producing 330 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque in compliance with regulations. Opel is developing the Astra for competition in the newly created TCR series, which holds races on the national, continental, and international level all using the same standardized technical rules. The idea behind the series is that any TCR race car can compete in any TCR race anywhere in the world without modifications. Volkswagen recently announced it was building a seventh-generation Golf race car that meets TCR standards. That wide-body hatch makes the same 330 hp as the Astra.

The Opel Astra TCR racer is currently undergoing development, but will make its debut in Frankfurt this year ahead of the customer race program's launch. Opel says full technical specifications will be revealed at a later date and that testing begins in October.
