Peugeot showed off a dramatic crossover concept, the Quartz, at the Paris auto show.

Research

This crossover concept is built on the same EMP2 platform as the Peugeot 308 small family car, but the two vehicles look nothing alike. The Quartz Concept struts dramatic lines, huge 23-inch wheels, LEDs, and a checkered red and black grille that changes pattern based on a viewer's vantage point. The SUV itself has two body colors, including a mineral gray in front and a dark black for the rear. Red lighting under the vehicle makes it look like a rock sitting on top of lava.

Peering inside the vehicle reveals a cockpit swathed in leather, everywhere from the floor pan and headliner to the seats. A large head-up display complements a 45-degree polycarbonate strip that shows drivers all the key information about their trip. There is room for just four passengers in this car, but each gets his or her own bucket seat.

So what powers this radically styled crossover ? A 270-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, paired with a six-speed automatic, is just part of the equation. The crossover also uses two electric motors – -- one driving the front axle and another powering the rear axle. In total, the crossover produces 500 hp.

On electric power alone, the crossover can travel 31 miles. Along with EV mode, Road mode utilizes the combustion engine and front motor to enhance battery charging, while Race mode makes use of the sporty suspension, engine, and both motors for maximum power.
