Volkswagen is going on an electrified spree, having just introduced the XL1, Golf GTE, e-up!, and e-Golf. Now, the automaker will debut a plug-in hybrid Passat at the Paris auto show next month.

The Volkswagen Passat GTE comes with a turbocharged and direct-injected 1.4-liter I-4 engine paired with an electric motor and a 9.9-kWh lithium-ion battery. Combined, the system produces 214 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a six-speed dual clutch transmission. The GTE Plug-In should be fairly quick, with VW estimating 0-60 mph in less than 8.0 seconds.

In all-electric mode, the sedan can travel for 31 miles, which is better than the Prius Plug-In and Ford Fusion Energi, but a shorter distance than the Chevrolet Volt. Using only electricity, top speed drops from the standard 136 mph to just 80 mph. Recharging the GTE takes 4 hours and 15 minutes from a standard charging cable with a 230-volt socket, but an optional wall charger can be installed that can recharge the battery in 2 hours and 30 minutes. To help the plug-in stand out from the rest of the Passat lineup, the car will feature a unique chrome radiator grille with blue accents. The front bumper has cross panels in the lower air inlet and C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Standard features on the Passat GTE include LED headlights, post-collision braking system, driver alert system, emergency braking, rain sensor, and a parking aid.

Behind the wheel, drivers will be able to monitor their energy usage through a central display. This feature monitors real time EV range as well as potential EV range that can be achieved by turning off auxiliary functions that eat up electricity. It also includes an energy flow diagram and a program that allows drivers to record up to three departure and charging times.

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't look like the Passat GTE is making its way to the U.S. But customers in the U.K. will be able to order one next June, and these cars should start showing up on European streets by October 2015.
