With the 2014 Formula 1 season in the books, our colleagues at AUTOMOBILE are looking to a future when F1’s team roster could include a new entrant from Germany -- Audi or Porsche. The speculative report breaks down the challenges facing both brands and which one has a stronger chance of entering the premier racing series.

Before engine and chassis development even begins, AUTOMOBILE states that Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piech and F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone would have to overcome tough negotiations regarding profits. Piech would likely want more earnings than Ecclestone currently allows and reaching a deal could take at least three years.

That said, Audi has plenty of motorsports experience with its dominating LMP cars and would likely have enough cash to expand into F1. Audi is seemingly in a better position now than it was 20 years ago, when its multiple attempts at entering F1 never materialized. AUTOMOBILE estimates that the company would need until at least 2021 to develop an engine and chassis and lock down a partnership.

Meanwhile, Porsche could end its decades-long absence from F1. Like Audi, Porsche has LMP experience ( though not as extensive as Audi ) with a solid research and development team at its disposal. Which brand stands a better chance against Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG -- Audi or Porsche? Sound off below and head over to AUTOMOBILE for the full report.
