Today, Porsche unveils a new, single-seat customer sport race car based on the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, paying close attention to the lightweight design, aerodynamics, fuel economy, safety and handling to produce the 911 GT3 R.

The new model will feature a double-bubble roof and longer wheelbase than the previous generation to give the GT3 R a more balanced weight distribution and better handling. Porsche made use of intelligent aluminum-steel composite construction for the body, while the roof, front cover, fairing, wheel arches, doors, side, and rear sections use a light carbon fiber composite material to increase weight savings. The windows and windshield have been made using polycarbonate.

Power will come in the form of a direct-injected 4.0-liter flat-six paired with a sequential six-speed constant-mesh gearbox that pumps out about 494 hp, and will feature variable valve timing technology. While the engine may be similar to the GT3 RS, the brakes received further modifications to increase stiffness and control with the anti-lock brakes.

In terms of safety, Porsche has reinforced the FT3 safety fuel cell to hold almost 32 gallons, and implemented a fuel cut-off safety valve. Each door and side window can be removed, while the escape hatch in the roof has been widened.

Customers can order the new Porsche 911 GT3 R for roughly $491,500. Deliveries will start December 2015.
