They may not be the vehicles to come to mind when you think of canyon-carvers, but the Porsche Macan Turbo and Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG both proved their merits on this week's episode of Head 2 Head. Senior features editor Jonny Lieberman recently took these small urban SUVs out of their element to the Anza-Borrego desert to see which would perform the best on the open road.

If numbers had their way, the Porsche would probably take the cake. This model pumps out 400 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque from its 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6, which is more than can be said for the GLA's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with "just" 355 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. In both models, power is delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. While the Macan hits 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, the Mercedes takes just a hair longer at 4.3 seconds.

The GLA's advantage lies in its weight. Weighing 900 pounds less than the Macan, the GLA also performs slightly better in the quarter mile at 12.8 seconds at 107.9 mph. Just like the Macan, the GLA hugs the curves of the windy road, holding its own as a truly sporty car.

But only one model can reign supreme. To find out "which elephant is the best rollerblader," watch the video above.
