Four years ago, Porsche greenlighted production of the automaker's most expensive model to date, the 918 Spyder. Before the new model even hit showroom floors, half of the production orders were already spoken for. To commemorate the latest model, only 918 copies were made, and with a sticker price starting just under $1 million, it's taken a while to unload them all.

This week, however, Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier went on record with Reuters, saying, "We're close to the finish line," and that the number of 918 Spyders left is in the double-digits. With strong demand from the North American market, this hybrid hypercar should be completely sold out by next month.

Since going on sale, the Porsche 918 Spyder has impressed Porsche and car enthusiasts alike with its performance both on and off the track.

As a whole, Porsche sales have also benefitted from sales of the new Macan compact SUV, which may bring the brand's overall sales volume from 162,000 to more 200,000 units globablly for 2014. Volkswagen Group is hopeful that the profits from the remaining Porsche 918 Spyder will help boost profits and fund its global expansion plans to eclipse sales of rival Toyota Motor Co.
