Certain 2014 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models are being recalled for a software issue related to the airbag electronic control unit (ECU).

The Problem:2014 Toyota Highlander models with improper airbag ECU software (which controls the front passenger seatbelt force-limiter) may use the restrain setting designed for small occupants under 110 pounds for occupants of all sizes. Because of this, affected vehicles do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208: Occupant Crash Protection.

The Fix: Beginning mid-June 2014, the automaker will notify owners to take their 2014 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs to a dealer to update the airbag ECU with the proper software. Concerned owners can contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall affects 50,000 2014 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs. No build dates were provided.
