BMW is expanding an earlier recall that addressed faulty airbags from supplier Takata. The recall of roughly 574,000 BMW models in the U.S. follows a string of recalls recently announced by other automakers for the same issue. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is also recalling a handful of models to address airbags, though the issue is unrelated to the Takata recalls.

The Problem: Airbags in certain older 3 Series models may have an inflator that can rupture and spray shrapnel, possibly leading to injury. BMW says it's not aware of any such instance occurring in its cars, though cars from other makes with the same airbags have experienced the problem.

The Fix: BMW will notify customers and replace the front passenger-side airbag free of charge. Owners can call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall affects approximately 574,000 model-year 2000-2006 BMW 3 Series models in the U.S. BMW previously recalled 42,000 3 Series models for the same issue in May 2013. Because Takata has now widened the date range of potentially faulty airbags, the recall is being expanded. Owners that got their airbags replaced during the last recall are exempt.

The Problem: Certain 2014 Mercedes-Benz models had their airbag assemblies improperly assembled, which could prevent them from deploying properly. Mercedes notes that people should not sit in the passenger seat until the recall is carried out.

The Fix: Mercedes will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger airbag free of charge. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372 for more info.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall affects 311 model-year 2014 SLK (including SLK250, SLK350, and SLK55 AMG) and SL (including SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG) models built between March 19 and May 5, 2014.
