Toyota will offer its Auris small car with a 1.2-liter direct-injected turbocharged engine, the automaker reported today. The refreshed model is now on sale in Japan.

Research

The 1.2-liter engine represents Toyota's second turbocharged entry in a series of new engines with improved thermal and fuel efficiency. To achieve these improvements on the Auris, Toyota used an exhaust manifold integrated with the cylinder head, a larger variable-angle VVT-iW system, an advanced fuel-injection system, and stop-start technology.

The new engine features 114 hp and 136 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque generated at a wide range of rpms between 1500 rpm and 4000 rpm. It is paired with what Toyota calls a Super CVT-i transmission promising responsive acceleration and smooth performance. In Japan, other engines in the Auris lineup include 1.5-liter and 1.8-liter powerplants.

The Toyota Auris will be sold as the Scion iM here in the 'States, but that doesn't mean we will see the turbo 1.2-liter engine. The automaker says it has no plans to offer the small turbo in the U.S., so instead, the iM will get a 1.8-liter engine with 137 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque. This is more hp but slightly less torque compared to the 1.2-liter engine.

Although the 1.2-liter turbo won't be coming our way anytime soon, we think there is a strong possibility it will debut in the next-generation Corolla or possibly the Yaris and other Toyota and Scion products.
