Refreshing or Revolting: 2016 Lincoln MKX

Whether you love them or hate them, the luxury crossover segment is growing, currently holding 11 percent of the automotive market on a global scale. That number will rise in the coming years as more automakers better their offerings or add to their existing lineups. The 2016 Lincoln MKX has been classed up for the new model year, hoping to garner more of the market share for itself and to better compete with the top contenders in the segment. We first saw the new 2016 Lincoln MKX at the 2015 Detroit auto show, but how much do we like the new look?

Right away, the exterior catches your eye, and we were glad to see that the production version didn't stray from the concept that was shown last year. The butterfly grille has been toned down from the concept, with slats that frame available all-LED headlights. Instead of the traditional vertical grille slats, Lincoln has made them horizontal to better flow with the new headlight design. Instead of projector headlights, Lincoln makes use of a blade shape, further differentiating the 2016 MKX from the previous model. A brushed metallic bar has also been added around the side intakes on the lower front bumper, giving the front end a more refined look.

Taking a look from the side, not much has changed. Strong character lines still run from headlights to taillights, and a sharper chrome accent has been added to the bottom of the doors. For the new model year, Lincoln has introduced a new wheel design that help make the 2016 MKX look sportier and more attractive.

In the rear, the automaker has added chrome accents around the new taillight setup for a more refined appearance. The rear fascia has also been tweaked, and is not as bulbous as the previous model. Now, the lines are much cleaner, and the overall design is overall more appealing.

The interior of the 2016 Lincoln MKX has also been significantly updated, and while it is much improved over the outgoing model, it is still reminiscent of a Ford interior. However, the new interior features plenty of brushed aluminum accents and soft-touch materials to offer a degree of sophistication. The center stack has also been redesigned with more buttons and knobs, taking into consideration the sometimes aggravating touchscreen. Like other models in the Lincoln lineup, the new MKX receives a push-button gear select setup in place of the old center console shift lever.

Last week's Refreshing or Revolting featured the 2016 Honda Pilot, and reactions were mixed.

"Less revolting than previous versions but still revolting," said frcastellanos.

"Refreshing. New exterior looks more up to date and the interior is easily one of the best in its class," said Yoma.

"Revolting. Oversized CR-V. Too van like. Uninspiring," said Daddychicken.

"Compared to the tired and outdated previous design this looks incredible," said jdrch.
