It's not easy changing a car's name (just think of Infiniti's new nomenclature and the confusion that created) so there had to be a good reason why Aston Martin changed the name of its limited-run Vantage from "Vantage GT3" to "Vantage GT12". According to a new report, Aston Martin gave up the "GT3" name to avoid a legal battle with Porsche, which also uses the moniker for its 911.

According to a new report, Aston Martin revealed what happened after its lawyers have been in talks with the German automaker. What's clear is that Porsche has called dibbs on the GT3 name for its road-going cars since 1999 when it slapped the GT3 badge on the 996-series 911. But confusion started when Aston claimed the GT3 badge was used prior to 1999 (for the Lotus Esprit GT3). Regardless, Aston Martin is avoiding a prolonged battle with Stuttgart and has switched the Vantage GT3 name to Vantage GT12, which arguably suits the car better given its V-12 engine.

No matter the name, the Vantage GT12 is just as capable as ever. Debuting at the Geneva motor show this year, Aston Martin's most potent road-going Vantage is complete with a 6.0-liter V-12 engine that makes about 591 hp. The current race version produces just a little more at 600 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. It features a lower body and wider track compared to its stablemates, and comes in about 220 pounds less than the Vantage S. The race car version, by the way, will also be renamed Vantage GT12 to avoid confusion.

Bentley has also snagged the GT3 label with the Continental GT3 R road car, but considering it is also part of Volkswagen Group, it likely won't receive any problems from Porsche.
