Report: Audi to Greenlight RS 3 for the U.S., but Likely Not the Q1

Admittedly, we were skeptical that the RS 3 model would make its way to the U.S. But according to a new report, Audi has strong aspirations to bring the high-performance compact car to market alongside the Q8 crossover.

Audi U.S. boss Scott Keogh told Automotive News that the RS 3 sedan would be a "great halo car" for the U.S. market. He says it would be a better fit than the hot hatch version currently offered in Europe.

"We really, really want the RS 3," Keogh said. "I'm very confident we'll see that car in the market. That's as far as I'm going to go."

The Audi RS 3 will add to the automaker's extensive A3 lineup, which includes convertibles, diesels, and plug-in hybrid variants. The RS 3 hatch for Europe features significantly more power than the already-high-performance S3 thanks to its 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine with 362 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque. Audi says the RS 3 can hit 0-62 mph in just 4.3 seconds with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Audi RS3 Sportback© Provided by MotorTrend Audi RS3 Sportback

Audi has already confirmed it would bring the Q8 to the U.S. market, but now we have a few more clues about the model. Keogh said it should arrive stateside in 2017 after it hits European showrooms. The exec called it a "home run product for the U.S." market thanks in part to its size. It will be derived from the redesigned Q7 crossover, and could act as a sportier or more premium alternative. As we previously reported, this model will be offered alongside an all-electric crossover.

These two new crossovers will have to make up for the fact that Audi will probably not offer the Q1 in the states. According to Keogh, a mini crossover from Audi might not be able to offer the right mix of price and value for U.S. customers.
