The Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid has gone through many highs and lows since its launch in 2012, ending with a bankruptcy in 2013. Last year we reported that the company would restart manufacturing in 2014, but now a new report from the Orange Country Register quotes Fisker chief marketing officer Jim Taylor in saying that the Karma will return in mid-2016.

Research

In the interview, Taylor details the rebuilding of Fisker, including relocation to a new headquarters in Costa Mesa, California and hiring around 200 new employees. Fisker is also working on a new production facility in Moreno Valley, California, where the next iteration of the Karma will reportedly be built. The target date for the Fisker Karma’s relaunch is set for mid-2016, though Taylor told the OC Register that the company “won’t make any promises” on a concrete launch date.

The previous Fisker Karma, which was built in Finland, used a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder with an electric motor to make for a total power output of 403 hp and a claimed 50 mile electric driving range. 1,800 of these Karma models were sold in the U.S. before issues with the battery packs prompted recalls, which led to bankruptcy in 2013. The new Karma will reportedly use the same battery supplier, A123 Systems, as the previous car, but with an improved chemistry to prevent the fire risks in the previous battery packs.
