The 2017 Audi A4 has arrived in its full glory, but now the wait begins for the upcoming S4 and RS4 performance variants. A new report from Auto Express details the high-po RS4 along with its RS5 coupe variant, saying that these new models will be powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 with an electric turbocharger to make around 480 hp.

Though previous versions of the RS4 and RS5 used a naturally aspirated, 4.2-liter V-8, this move to forced induction doesn’t come as much of a surprise. We’ve detailed Audi’s plans for electric turbocharging before, and the RS4 will reportedly represent the first use of this technology on an Audi production car, with the RS5 coupe to follow shortly afterwards. The electrically driven turbo makes for better low end boost without lag, and is powered by batteries that recoup their charge through a generator that captures energy through regenerative braking.

The last Audi RS4 sold in the U.S. offered both sedan and wagon bodystyles, but the new RS4 is likely to remain Avant-only like the outgoing RS 4 sold in Europe. Sadly, we don’t expect this model to come to the U.S., as the Allroad wagon will still be the only A4 wagon variant sold in America. But the closely related Audi RS5 Coupe is a sure bet for the U.S., and will do battle with the BMW M4 and the Cadillac ATS-V coupe when it arrives sometime in 2016.

Stay tuned for more information about the next Audi RS4 and RS5 models as we learn more about the new electric turbo powertrain and the launch date for these high-performance Audis.
