An unspecified number of Tesla Model S owners have received emails chiding them for using local supercharger stations rather than charging their cars at home, according to recent reports. Where the supercharger stations are intended for drivers traveling long distances, the email suggests owners are abusing the free network.

Many owners were upset with part of the letter that stated: “As a frequent user of local Superchargers, we ask that you decrease your local Supercharging and promptly move your Model S once charging is complete.” The letter also informed customers that charging at home costs less than $2 per 40 miles worth of range and sometimes less during off-peak hours.

A few owners vented about the letters on the Tesla Owners Club forum with some saying their nearest supercharger station is more than 50 miles away, and that they only stopped to use them to make it the rest of the way home after an extended drive.

Use of the rapid-charging system is free for life to all Model S customers.

Do you think Tesla owners should be restricted on how often they use the supercharger stations ? Share your thoughts below.
