Volkswagen is prepping a slew of new Tiguans that should bolster the automaker's sparse lineup of SUVs. After Volkswagen debuts its Tiguan Coupe in 2017, the automaker plans to offer a range-topping Tiguan Coupe R the following year, according to Autocar.

The TIguan Coupe R will feature a 2.0-liter gas engine tuned similarly to the Golf R, which produces 292 hp. Just like the performance hatch, the Tiguan Coupe R will also pack 280 lb-ft of torque and will be mated to a six-speed dual clutch automatic. The two "R" models will likely achieve similar performance in straight-line tests. When we tested the VW Golf R earlier this year, it managed to hit 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

Also look for a specially tuned suspension, all-wheel drive, and an electric torque vectoring system on the new model. In terms of styling, the coupe will feature a sloping roofline, more prominent C-pillar, and a shallower greenhouse for a whole new look, while keeping the standard Tiguan's four traditional doors. The Tiguan Coupe R addresses a new market segment ushered in by other high-performance small vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG, Euro-market Audi RS Q3, and rumored Range Rover Evoque SVR.

Volkswagen is almost ready to introduce an all-new standard Tiguan model. The Tiguan lineup will share the same MQB platform with the new Golf and many of that car's engine options, including a turbo 1.8-liter inline-four and a 2.0-liter turbo. The new Tiguan will go on sale globally later this year. In 2016, Volkswagen will introduce a long-wheelbase version of the Tiguan that offers space for seven passengers. We've heard this will be the primary body style sold in the U.S., though VW may decide to bring a coupe model here considering the demand for fastback crossovers like the BMW X4 and others.

Further down the line, a revamped Touareg flagship SUV is set to launch in 2017. In 2018, look for the CrossBlue Coupe to emerge, along with the Polo-based T-Roc small crossover.
