Leaked images of a 1:43-scale model car purport to show the design of the upcoming Volvo S90 sedan before its impending debut, according to Swedish website Teknikens Värld. We expect to see a production version of this luxury sedan, which will compete with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sometime early next year.

The S90 will be the second Volvo model to use the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture and design language, after the 2016 Volvo XC90 SUV. We don’t know if these model cars are truly an indication of the production Volvo S90’s design, but it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the overall look is inspired by the series of three concept cars that established a new design language for the Swedish luxury brand.

A gently curved greenhouse transitions into a sloping rear window that gives the car a fastback shape a la the Audi A7. A stubby trunklid and C-shaped taillights round out the rear.

Replacing the aging Volvo S80 in the lineup, the upcoming Volvo S90 will use versions of Volvo’s Drive-E 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The U.S. will most likely get the 316-hp turbocharged and supercharged unit found in the XC90, with European versions getting a diesel option as well. A V90 wagon variant will follow the sedan by a few months.

Stay tuned for more news about the Volvo S90 to see if this new model ends up looking like this scale model. Volvo S90 model car© Provided by MotorTrend Volvo S90 model car
