The Mercedes-AMG GT S has been doing such a great job serving as the safety car in Formula 1, that it has been called to serve double-duty as the official DTM safety car.

Set to make its debut during the second DTM race for the season at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz taking place from May 29-31, the sexy German safety car will not only provide eye candy for race goers, but it will also help ensure safety by pacing the race. Manning the sports car will be race driver Jürgen Kastenholz, who will slow down the field of DTM cars to a safe speed whenever hazards present themselves on the track. Aside from the official safety car livery and the safety lights propped on top of the roof, the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S is basically the same as the production car and the F1 safety car. This means it’s still powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that makes 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. With the help of a sports suspension featuring aluminum double-wishbone axles, the model can reach a top speed of 190 mph and hit 62 mph in 3.8 seconds. The Mercedes-AMG GT S replaces the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series safety car, which served safety-car duty from 2012 to 2014. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

For those who won’t get to see it this upcoming weekend, the GT S safety car will make its rounds again at the fourth race in Zandvoort, Netherlands in July, and then again at the final race in Hockenheim in October.
