Rolls-Royce executives are still undecided as to whether its upcoming SUV will go into production. BMW Group board member for Rolls-Royce Peter Schwarzenbauer told Autocar that the company is "looking seriously into it," but has not made a firm decision.

"Fifty percent of cars sold around the world are now SUVs," Schwarzenbauer told Autocar. "But there's no decision yet. If we're not totally convinced, we're not going to do it. It's got to look like a Rolls-Royce."

Research

The revelation that there is no firm production decision on the Rolls-Royce SUV comes after Lamborghini revealed it still hasn't decided whether to sell its Urus SUV.

Rolls-Royce had planned to launch its SUV, which will be related to the upcoming BMW X7, by 2017 or 2018. However, Schwarzenbauer indicated some of the hesitation comes from the fact that Rolls-Royce is still evaluating different designs for its SUV.

The Rolls-Royce SUV is expected to be based on the X7 but with a unique aluminum architecture, a 6.75-liter V-12 engine, and all-wheel drive -- all for a price tag around $300,000. Although the model will be sold globally, sales of Rolls-Royce models in China have also inspired the production of an ultra-luxurious SUV.
