The new long-wheelbase Range Rover may soon have some competition on its hands. Rolls-Royce is reportedly in the early stages of developing a super-luxury SUV, which could launch as early as 2017.

According to reports from Autocar, the Rolls-Royce SUV will be designed to be a proper luxury SUV, and not a coupe-like crossover like the BMW X6 or upcoming Mercedes-Benz MLC.

Giles Taylor, Rolls-Royce's design head, told the outlet that he didn't think an SUV would undermine the Rolls brand, adding, "I'm interested in function and functionality. I'm looking to create a properly functional vehicle – a shooting brake, not a crossover with a sloping roof. A proper SUV."

So what would a Rolls-Royce SUV look like? Well for starters, it isn't likely to ride on the Phantom's chassis, as that's the flagship of the lineup. Rather, we think a Rolls-Royce SUV would share its platform with the recently announced BMW X7 seven-seater crossover, or possibly the Ghost.

Its exterior will likely be classic big and boxy Rolls, while the interior will be "cool" and "modern" but without being ostentatious, says Gilles.

Autocar believes the SUV will cost around $340,000 when it eventually hits Rolls-Royce showrooms. When it does, we're sure the Range Rover and upcoming Bentley SUV will be ready to duke it out in the classiest of ways.
