Remember that front-drive Seat Leon Cupra 280 hatchback that lapped the Nürburgring in less than 8 minutes? Well, another member of the Cupra family came pretty close to that time, with the Leon ST Cupra 280 wagon blistering around the ring in 7:58.12.

According to Seat, this makes the Leon ST Cupra 280 the fastest front-wheel drive wagon to lap the Nürburgring, and fans will be able to see it up close and personal when it makes its debut at the Wörthersee festival this week. The stock wagon is powered by VW's ubiquitous 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that makes 280 metric horsepower, or about 276 hp. That power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, while the Black Performance pack adds extra track goodies including 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, and side skirts. Helping the Leon ST Cupra 280 clinch the record was Spanish pro racer Jordi Gené. “It was an indescribable feeling to get the best out of this car and to be the first to achieve this record,” he said in a release. Gené also piloted the Leon Cupra 280 hatchback that produced a 7:58.4 lap time last June. At the time, it was good enough to set a new front-wheel drive production car record at the ‘Ring, though a few months later Renault took the title away with its Megane R.S. 275 Trophy-R, which completed the feat in just 7 minutes, 54 seconds.
