It's been 50 years since a small American team led by Carroll Shelby beat Ferrari at its own game, winning the 1965 FIA World Championship. Now, Shelby American is celebrating that milestone and the iconic sports car behind it by offering a limited run of 50 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe continuation cars.

Research

The limited release follows up on the 50th anniversary Shelby Cobra big block roadsters, which were also limited to 50 units. Shelby says it was "bombarded with requests" for a Daytona Coupe continuation model, so it obliged.

The cars will be offered in both fiberglass and aluminum, marking the first time the company has built aluminum continuation Daytona Coupes. Shelby American says each car is built using the original blueprints and measurements, but since each of the six original cars was slightly different, one specification that best represents the Daytona Coupe was chosen for all the continuation models. Though there was never an original Daytona Coupe rendered in fiberglass, Shelby American says the lightweight body is "true to the spirit of the Coupe" and that it "reimagined" the car as if it had remained in production over the years. The 50 continuation cars will receive numbered plaques, with serial numbers CSX9950-CSX9999 reserved for the special Daytona Coupes.

The limited-edition models also receive a wood-rimmed steering wheel, black leather interior, and special badging. Each car is delivered as a rolling chassis and can be finished by either a customer or an authorized dealer. An aluminum-block 289-cubic-inch Ford V-8 with matching serial number is available separately through the Shelby Engine Company. Though you won't spend the millions of dollars needed to own an original Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, the continuation models won't come cheap. Pricing for an aluminum coupe is set at $349,995, and doesn't include the drivetrain. A fiberglass version will set you back $179,995 without the drivetrain.
