Now that Volvo has solid midsize and full-size crossovers with the XC60 and XC90, it’s time to work on a compact version. The smaller crossover, which will probably wear an XC40 badge, has been rumored for at least a year now, and Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson recently said it’s still very much on the table.

“A small SUV is very high on our wish list,” Samuellsson said in an interview with Autocar. “There is a clear trend towards downsizing and we will provide customers with an SUV that is small in stature but remains premium in nature.”

To make the XC40 a reality, Volvo, along with its Chinese parent company Geely, will develop a new platform called the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). Work on the CMA platform is reportedly underway, and the new architecture should underpin other compact Volvos, likely a sedan and wagon that will fall under the 40 badge.

Volvo’s 60 and 90 models currently ride on the Scalable Product Architecture platform that will remain the basis for the automaker’s core models.

Additionally, Samuelsson said coupes and convertibles are less of a priority.

“The job for now is to become bigger and more profitable doing what we already do but doing it much better and charging more for it,” he told Autocar. “Only then can we start looking at coupes and convertibles.

Before focusing on those sportier variants, Volvo’s goal is to increase its annual sales from around 450,000 at present to about 800,000 by 2020. That said, a Volvo XC40 makes sense, considering the strong competition and demand for compact crossovers like the BMW X1, Range Rover Evoque, and Buick Encore.
