General Motors has taken to the Rockies to test quite a few new products, and we were able to get a glimpse at a prototype for the upcoming Cadillac CT6 in full camouflage. Despite this, there were a few elements of the new model we were able to pick up on.

As we've heard previously, the upcoming model will be Cadillac's flagship for now, but it won't be aimed directly at the top-dog Mercedes-Benz S-Class and others in the luxury flagship sedan category. The new Cadillac CT6 will be underpinned by a rear-wheel-drive platform, and will likely be positioned against the Mercedes CLS and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. A larger model intended to be a true S-Class fighter will arrive later.

The CT6 will be powered by a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine, and a plug-in hybrid model is also expected. However, the Omega rear-drive platform can support a full engine lineup, featuring four-, six-, and eight-cylinder versions.

We've been hearing about the new Cadillac CT6 since late last year, from what body materials to expect and also where production will take place. Cadillac will utilize a combination of high-strength steel, aluminum, and steel stampings and castings, while the body will be made out of aluminum. Production to will take place at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, where the company invested $300 million in a new body shop exclusively for the 2016 CT6.

The 2016 Cadillac CT6 is expected to go on sale later this year, so its official debut should be just around the corner.
