Last year we saw a Porsche 911 mule on the streets sporting light camouflage before the 2014 Los Angeles auto show, and rumors spread that the new model would be so different that it would receive a new chassis designation (992 as opposed to the current 991). It's unclear if that's the case, but now we've caught a 2016 Porsche 911 prototype out testing without any camo.

The new prototype shows off a new front end that draws on styling elements from the most recent Cayman GT4. Notable changes include updated headlights with thin LED DRLS, new door handles, an updated hood with extra vents, updated rear bumper with new vents, new exhaust, and refreshed taillight design. Rumors suggest Porsche will replace the current 3.4-liter flat-six engine with a turbocharged flat-six or even a turbocharged flat-four similar to the unit coming to the 2016 Cayman and Boxster, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

With the central-mounted exhaust pipes, it's possible that this prototype could be the back-to-basics GT model we've heard about . Looking at the limited view we have of the interior, the photographer suggests that the seats may be leather bucket seats instead of the normal racing seats usually found in Porsche mules. If this really is the rumored GT, we expect it will be offered in all three body styles: coupe, convertible, and Targa.

What do you think of the 911's refreshed look?
