Spied: 2016 Toyota Prius Caught Without Camo

Our spy photographers caught the next-generation Toyota Prius fully exposed while on a photoshoot in Malibu, Calif. Now that the camouflage is gone, we see the Prius bears some unexpected design cues.

Research

The 2016 Toyota Prius was spotted completely uncovered, and it's not difficult to notice the visual similarities between the hybrid and the all-new Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. Narrow headlights extend far into the hood of the car, ridding the Prius of its former bug-eyed look. Like the Mirai, the 2016 Prius bears a wrap-around rear window and interesting character lines extending into the taillights. These units appear to be unique vertical taillights in the Prius. When we first spotted prototypes of the hybrid car, we noticed the model has adopted a more sedan-like body. Now that we see the Prius uncovered, the once-prominent hatch looks even smaller now. The Prius' new look goes along with the trend seen by the new 2016 Chevrolet Volt and Hyundai's upcoming hybrid car, which both feature three-box-style rear ends.

Expect the new fourth-generation Prius to ride on the automaker's new modular platform, the same one that underpins the Mirai. Fuel economy will increase significantly to 60 mpg, but juice is expected to again come from a nickel-metal-hydride battery. We expect Toyota will continue with the Prius Plug-In, which should receive a boost in electric range.

Toyota will officially unveil the new Prius in Las Vegas on September 8, according to recent reports. The model could go on sale by early 2016.
