Spied: BMW 1 Series Sedan Tester Prepares to Take on A3, CLA

When it comes to luxury sedans, there is intense competition among the big three -- the big three premium German brands, that is. Mercedes-Benz and Audi have already carved out a space in the hot entry-level luxury sedan segment, churning out cars with prices under $30,000. Now it's BMW's turn to take a piece of the pie.

Our spy photographer recently caught a BMW 1 Series sedan prototype out testing on public roads in Germany. While the car may be heavily camouflaged, it is clear that the new 1 Series has a much narrower front end and shorter body compared to the 3 Series. The new entry-level car is riding on Mini's new front-wheel-drive UKL platform. Our shooter says there's a slim chance that it could be labeled as a 2 Series model, considering the five-door Active Tourer model with the same platform was categorized under the 2 umbrella. Last year, BMW lost its title as the best-selling luxury brand in the U.S. to Mercedes-Benz. While its larger sedans still garner more sales, the CLA has garnered healthy sales from the start, as has Audi's A3 sedan.

Expect BMW's small sedan to reach dealers in 2016 as a 2017 model-year car.
